    abstract

Within the past decade, it has become evident that, for any practical payload, escape from the earth is not feasible with the rocket exhaust velocities obtainable from chemical combustion and the mass ratios that result from practical techniques of construction. Hence, rocket enthusiasts have turned their attention to the less formidable and more promising task of contemplating an earth satellite. Many computations for and preliminary designs of such a satellite have been made; and they vary in the gross weight and size of the vehicle, depending upon the author s optimism with respect to exhaust velocities and mass ratios.
