    abstract

To materialize the design of a space- or rocket- ship it is required as in all applications of the engineering art, that suitable materials be selected among those physically available to the constructor. The suitability of a material may be determined by its meeting the operational requirements, its adaptability to the technological processes of fabrication, and also its price of purchase on a normal market. The properties and characteristics (chemical, physical, etc.) of the available materials impose some restrictions on the boundless exercise of the creative human mind whose ingenuity in the design of machinery must always reckon with the feasibility of making his invention take substantial shape. The price factor also assumes a most important place in the selection of materials, for, aside from military inspired projects, all other activities in the engineering field must be based on sound evaluation of economic nature.
