    abstract

Compressible Flat Plate Boundary Layer of an Electrically Conducting Fluid in the Presence of Magnetic Fields. The characteristics of the boundary layer generated by an electrically conducting fluid over a flat plate are known only for incompressible fluids. The subject paper deals with the corresponding problem for compressible fluids. The fundamental equations are written in their form valid for small values of the magnetic Reynolds number. The inviscid flow solution is determined first. Subsequently existence and limits of applicability of first integrals of the energy equations are investigated and discussed. The STEWABTSON-lLLnsrowoBTH transformation and concomitant hypotheses are then used to reduce the equations to “quasi-incompress- ible” forms. Series solutions in terms of a suitable “magnetic parameter” are found for both momentum and energy equations. Results of the above outlined analysis are presented in terms of velocity profiles (determined up to third order terms in the “magnetic parameter”), enthalpy profiles (determined up to second order terms), skin friction coefficients, recovery factors and Nttsselts number for the following situations of interest: 1. magnetic field fixed with respect to the plate 2. magnetic field fixed with respect to the free stream 3. electric conductivity as a function of the absolute temperature. The characteristics of the subject magneto-fluid-dynamic boundary layer are finally compared with those pertinent to the conventional flat plate boundary layer of compressible, electrically conducting fluids. Conclusions and deductions therefrom are discussed.
