    abstract

This paper deals with the selection of a guidance system for space exploration. It reviews the various techniques employed in the systems representing the existing state-of-the-art and selects the technique for the proposed system. The proposed system utilizes range and range data measurements over base lines varying from a few hundred to several thousand miles to provide the most accurate earth based guidance system. The basic technique employed in this proposed system is being utilized in ground instrumentation systems. Actual performance data on U.S. Air Force space probes are included to substantiate the predictions of system performance. Further expansion of the system through the use of satellite and moon based systems is suggested for deep space applications.
