    abstract

This paper describes a method of spacecraft attitude control that uses rotation about a single inertially fixed axis to change the orientation of the vehicle. The following topics are discussed (Fig. 1): (1) The near-optimality of maneuver by a single-axis rotation. (2) The computation of control signals to achieve a single-axis maneuver. (3) Avoiding gimbal lock in a vehicle using three-gimbal inertial-platform isolation.
