    abstract

    A technique for iteratively constructing a near-optimum guidance law is described. The method is similar to quasilinearization, but differs in that (1) a simpler approximation of the equations of motion is employed, and (2) a simplified form of second variation theory is applied to calculate the control at each iteration. The relationship to existing “explicit” guidance techniques is discussed.
