    abstract

A program developed to educate teachers, students, and the public on the diverse benefits of space research is described. It involved first a series of popular lectures given principally by local members of the Huntsville aerospace community. This was followed by a summer teacher workshop that emphasized the use of specially updated, space-oriented instructional materials, improved teaching methods, and increased student motivation through direct participation. The lectures and workshop were organized by a group of societies in the Huntsville area in cooperation with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the Alabama Space and Rocket Center. Preliminary studies of a space benefits source book for use by teachers and students in future space educational programs are also reviewed.
