    abstract

The electron beam fluorescence probe was employed to measure the density disturbance in the vicinity of a sharp wedge in a hypersonic flow. A modulation technique was developed whereby the quantity of interest ^ p = paisturbea — Pfree stream is measured directly with an accuracy comparable to that obtained with an absolute density measurement. Details of the disturbance field are described quantitatively. As an example of the sensitivity of the method, the marked influence of the leading-edge bluntness has been conclusively demonstrated.
