    abstract

The results of investigating the physical and mechanical properties of lunar soil are given. These results are based on studies of the lunar sample brought to Earth by Luna 20 and lunar soil during the operation of Lunokhod 2. Although the investigations were made for different areas of the Moon, general regular features are noted in the behaviour of soil during its destruction and deformation. The conclusion is drawn about the existence of a single mechanism in the formation of the structure of the upper layer of the soil for a considerable portion of the lunar surface.
