    abstract

    The active magnetic bearings technology has been developped for military and space applications and is now available for industrial applications. This paper reminds briefly the principle, the advantages and the application fields of such a technology. An active magnetic bearing momentum wheel has been built for COMSAT's laboratories : description of this wheel, vernier gimballing possibility, performances concerning weight, power consumption, reliability ; technological improvements in the long run. Others space applications : energy storage, despun antennas, mechanical scanners. Status of art about industrial applications : vacuum pumps, machine tools, centrifugal machines, turbo compressors and so on.
