The Italian National Council of Research has been p a r t ec i pa t i ng since 1975 at a series of intercontinental balloon launchies from the base of Milo (Sicily)^ There are well known the scientific advantages that can be taken from experiments flown on such balloons. It has to be pointed out, anyway, that in the design of a stratospheric balloon it is a lot of work to do to remove the empiricism that is still operative in this field.
