    abstract

The NASA study activities in preparation for a space station began in the early 1970's and continued in one form or another until the President's announcement in January 1984. The early studies included many in-house NASA and contracted studies. The group of studies that immediately preceded the President's announcement were performed by a combination of NASA space personnel, aerospace contractors, international governments, and contractor personnel.
