    abstract

Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Public Corporation (NTT) has been carrying out research and development on satellite communications system since the 1960s. The first domestic satellite communications system, using two communications satellites (CS-2a & CS-2b) launched into geostationary orbits by Japanese N-II rockets in February and August 1983. respectively, was developed for commercial use in Japan. The system was put into service in May 1983. NTT domestic satellite communications system is the first commercial satellite communications system using the 30/20 GHz band anywhere in the world. Besides development of a high-frequency band, this system is characterized by adopting time division multiple access (TDMA) and introduction of small transportable earth stations. This paper describes the NTT domestic satellite communications system and its state of operation based on the experience of commercial service.
