A satellite EPIRB is defined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a free-float EPIRB operating in a satellite system and which contains a locating possibility in connection with a homing device. The operation of a satellite EPIRB can be made fully automatic and alerting may be obtained in distress situations where other methods probably no longer can be used. It is therefore expected that the satellite EPIRB will be one of the cornerstones in the future global maritime distress and safety system (FGMDSS).
