    abstract

This paper sets out to describe studies performed by AEROSPATIALE and an engine designers and manufacturers group consisting of ONERA, SEP and SNECMA on airbreathing propulsion for launch vehicles. Basic technical issues involved in airframe propulsion integration are presented. Some airbreathing engines are then described and their performances are assessed and compared. Criteria an airbreathing engine should satisfy for a Mach 6 SSTO are presented.
