This paper presents the mission and the main constraints of an autonomous martian rover whose preliminary studies are outstanding in CNES. The different functions to be fullfilled by the on-board data handling subsystem are identified for the vehicle and for its payload. The main features of a processing architecture are designed and problems remaining to solve are identified.
