    abstract

The efforts for promoting the Arecibo concept of the 1 km2 radio telescope further have been made in the scope of the country. Site surveying in China shows that the climate, geology and local government support are all rather encouraging for construction of large spherical dishes in the Karst region of Guizhou Province. Radio monitoring has revealed extremely low level of RIF in the surveyed area and particularly within the karst depressions. Preliminary designs for antenna reflector, feeding system, electronic and supporting structure have been proposed by a number of institutes and universities which are involved in the joint research. These relevant R&D are devoted to the most practical and the most cost effective way to realize the Arecibo-style 1 km2 radio telescope at low frequencies.
