    abstract

The present work examines experimentally the typical shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction induced by a cylindrical protuberance with changeable height mounted on a flat plate perpendicularly. The tests were carried out in a hypersonic wind tunnel at freestream Mach number of 5.0, and unit Reynolds number of 5.3xl07 hn. The main objective of the program was to give a classification of the disturbed llowfield around the cylinder. During the tests, pressure distributions along the leading edge of cylinder were measured, schlieren photographs and oil flow visualization were also taken. The experimental results showed that the complex llowfield around the cylindrical protuberances could be classified as three status according to the parameter HID (the ratio of height to diameter of cylinder) in different ranges as : (1) "non-semi-infinite interaction" for 0.2<///D<1.0, (2) "transitional status" for 1.()</-//D <2.0, (3) "semi-infinite interaction" for/7/D>2.0.
